How do you analyze power consumption? Is current constant? (Physics problem follows.)?

You buy an 1700W electric tea kettle while on a study abroad program in Britain, where electricity is delivered to homes at 220V. If you use the tea kettle at home in the United States, where electricity is delivered to homes at 120V, how much power will it consume?

This is how NOT to do it:

1700 = 220(current)
current = 7.727 A

P = 7.727(120) = 927.3 W

Why is that incorrect? What is the correct way to do this?

    How much power does a european appliance use in the U.S.?

    You buy an 1600W electric tea kettle while on a study abroad program in Britain, where electricity is delivered to homes at 230V. If you use the tea kettle at home in the United States, where electricity is delivered to homes at 115V, how much power will it consume?

    Why wouldn’t it just be 1600 W?

      increase in electric every hour?

      We have a electric monitor and trying to cut down on our electric usage as our bills are so high. My question is we had noticed that we were using over 3000 watts most times during the day and we think we have worked it out to be a fault multi socket for our entertainment area. We brought a new one which has a surge protector and seems to be doing the job BUT on our electric monitor as much as the usage has gone down a huge amount it is still spiking over 3000 watts every hour practically on the hour. This is the amount that is needed to boil a kettle so basically it is like us boiling a kettle every hour. We are monitoring it today and right on que it goes up with us just looking at it and not using any extra electricity. I have tired googling it and cant find anything so wondering if anyone has any idea why this would be?
      Your help much appreciated.
      Emma

          Can an electrical kettle with European 220 plug be used in the U.S.?

          I want to buy an electric water kettle that was made in Switzerland, but of course, the electrical cord would be a 220 volt instead of the U.S. 110. What would I have to do in order to be able to use it with U.S. electricity?
